Both John F. Kennedy and Jackie knew Grace Kelly before she married Prince Rainier of Monaco. After the former movie star's marriage, the two couples remained close friends. Following the formal state visit of the Prince and Princess, Grace presented a full suite of jewelry as a gift from the Principality of Monaco to the First Lady of the United States. John and Jackie reciprocated and also gave a personal gift, though it was not recorded as to what the gift specifically was. Jackie wore this set to various personal affairs and to at least two formal state dinners at the White House in 1962 and 1963. She continued to wear the set for many years after, and Caroline Kennedy has also worn the necklace and the earrings. In the fall of 1954, Grace Kelly had met Jackie at a dinner party. Then Senator Kennedy was in the hospital at the time recovering from painful back surgery, and Jackie had persuaded Grace to accompany her to the hospital to cheer him up. Jack was a huge fan of the actress and was pleasantly surprised when the actress and his wife arrived at his hospital room in nurses uniforms. This ring is pure sterling silver, plated with Rhodium and set with Swarovski crystals.
